1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

What is it?

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a free program encouraging children to read at an early age. Reading aloud to children before they begin kindergarten is a great way to prepare them for success in school; encourage social, emotional, and mental development; expand their vocabularies; strengthen family bonds; and so much more! If you'd like to learn more about it, you can access the 1,000 Books website HERE.

What age is this program meant for?

This program is intended for any child that has not yet entered into kindergarten.

How long does the program last?

This is a self-paced program, so it could last a few months or a few years. It really depends on how often you and your child read together.

What do I do?

Read with your child and keep track of what they've read. (You can make your own journal, print pages from the website, or pick a pre-bound folder up from the library)

Which books count?

All books count: books you read to your child, books siblings, grandparents, or friends read to your child, or books the child 'reads' to themselves (you know the one - the one that they've got memorized word-for-word. Speaking of which...) Be sure to count each book each time you read it!
