FAQs

What are the requirements for getting a library card?

For a free card, you must provide proof of residency within Jefferson County. This can be a driver's license or other form of government-issued ID (if this is different than your current address, you'll also need to bring a piece of mail, lease agreement, etc. with your name and current address.) Those living outside of Jefferson county may get a card as well; however, there is a $50 annual fee to do so.

Can my child get a library card?

Yes! To get a child a card, both the parent/legal guardian and child must be present to sign the application and responsibility statement. The parent/legal guardian must provide proof of identity and residency, as listed above. Also, any cards that the parent/guardian are already responsible for (their own card or another child's card) must be in good standing with a fine of $5.00 or less.

Where can I use my library card?

You can use your library card at any library in Jefferson County. For a list of Jefferson County libraries, their locations, and hours, CLICK HERE

Does my card ever expire?

Yes! Every two years, you will need to renew your card. You'll need to bring in your proof of identity and residency and verify that we have your current contact information on file. (There is no charge to renew a card, though pre-existing fines or out-of-county fees will need to be paid at this time.)

How many items can I check out at a time?

You're able to check out 150 items at a time!

Can I request materials from other libraries to pick up at the Tarrant Public Library?

Yes! The Tarrant Library is part of the Jefferson County Library Cooperative. (What's that mean?) It means that all the libraries in Jefferson County share resources with one another, and if another library owns what you're interested in, we can borrow it for you.

How do I know when my materials are due back?

Books and audiobooks are checked out for three weeks at a time; movies are checked out for one week. As long as there are no holds for the item and your card does not have more than $5 in fines, the items will automatically renew for you! (Maximum number of automatic renewals is two). If you aren't sure if your items have been renewed or not, you can check your account online by clicking HERE or you can call us and have us check on your account in the system.

Do I need a library card to use the computers?

No. If you do have one, you can definitely use that to log in, but if not, just ask for a guest pass at the front desk.

Do I need a card to check out materials?

Yes. While you are welcome to use any library materials while in the building, to actually take anything home, you DO need to have a card.

I forgot my PIN?

If you can't remember your card's PIN, you can have it reset at the front desk.
